Beauty Trend: Long, Messy Braids

comments

We love the long braids spotted on the models at Alexander McQueen's spring 2010 runway show. The half undone look is perfect for laid back days at school or weekends (much more chic than a pony tail, right?). It's easy to recreate, too. Just let hair dry naturally, part to one side, and loosely pull into a braid.

Does your skin get extremely pale in the winter? We all know tanning is extremely harmful and causes cancer, but alternative self tanners usually turn you orange. Spray tans are a slightly better option, but I personally like to avoid being pale one day and then super tan the next. So I decided to try out Nivea Sun-Kissed Gradual Tan Lotion for face and legs. The product claims that if you apply it daily, you will gradually become tan (Not "Jersey Shore" tan, but natural-looking tan).

So for two weeks I dutifully applied the lotion post-shower. After two weeks, I did notice that my skin looked a little darker and had a "glow."

But there are cons to this product. First of all, it added a lot of extra time to my morning routine. It takes a long time to apply, and then you have to wait 10 minutes to put your clothes on. The second con is that it does not smell good. It smells like chemicals, which is not what I want to cover my body with right before I head out the door.

Bottom line: This product works, but I'd suggest putting it on at night, then showering in the morning to remove the smell!

Estee Lauder's "Love Your Lips" Collection

LoveYourLips_S10.jpgJust in time for Valentine's Day, Estee Lauder launched the new, limited edition "Love Your Lips" collection this month. The collection includes 12 lipsticks and 4 glosses that promise to make your lips pretty and kissable. Each lipstick and gloss contains the "LOVE" mark and can be worn alone or layered together. What do you think of the collection? Is it adorable or tacky? And most importantly, would you wear it?

"Love Your Lips" Lipstick ($19.50) and Gloss ($18) are available at esteelauder.com and at Estee Lauder counters.

How To Cover Up a Blemish

comments
139888-main_Full.jpgIt's almost the weekend, and you're so ready to go out and have fun. Maybe you have a hot date planned, or you're heading to a concert with friends. You definitely do not have room in your plans for acne! In case a blemish pops up, here are some tips on how to cover it correctly.

1. Pick a yellow/green-tinted concealer to cover up red blemishes. We suggest Physician's Formula Concealer Twins ($6.95 at beauty.com) because it contains both green and skin-colored concealer. Use the regular concealer to cover up scars or other marks.

2. Use your finger to apply a dot of concealer to the blemish. Then "tap," don't rub, the concealer until it blends in.

3. Apply powder to set the concealer, and you're good to go! Our favorite pressed powder is Neutrogena Healthy Skins Blend ($10.99 at drugstore.com).

Beauty Trend: Taupe Nail Polish

Sandra Bullock rocked taupe nail polish at the Golden Globes, but she isn't the only star loving this color. The shade has recently been spotted on Kate Beckinsale, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Lily Allen, to name a few. The craze began when Chanel debuted the color during their spring/summer 2010 runway show.

We think taupe is a refreshing change of pace from the extreme dark and neon nail trends we've seen lately. Plus it goes great with spring's neutral palette and soft colors, like light pink.

Would you wear this color? See below for some different polish options.

Adorable & Cheap Valentine's Day Gifts

There's nothing more beautiful or inviting than a department store or beauty shop: all those pretty bottles, perfectly lined up, each promising to transform your hair or skin into something gorgeous. Unfortunately, there's also nothing more expensive. Here are four places you can find high-end beauty brands at prices everyone can afford:

1. Off-price retailers like Marshall's or TJ Maxx usually have a beauty section with a random selection of designer hair products, skin products, and perfumes at amazing prices. I recently scored a set of Rusk Sensories Moist hair products (shampoo, conditioner, and mousse) at Marshall's for about $15!

2. There are tons of discount beauty e-tailers that take the surplus from department stores and boutiques and sell them at ridiculously low prices. Some of our favorite shopping sites are BeautyTicket.comBeautyEncounter.com, BuyMeBeauty.com, StrawberryNet.com, and FragranceNet.com.

3. Online sample sale sites like Hautelook and Gilt often have temporary sales for high-end beauty brands. For example, Hautelook had an amazing sale last week featuring a wide selection of Urban Decay products for less than $10 - a great opportunity to stock up on favorite products! Another sample sale site, Market For Drama, only sells beauty products.

4. Outlet stores don't usually have as deep discounts as online discount stores, but they often have a larger selection. Some examples are Cost Cutters Salon & Products, Perfumania, and Beauty Supply Outlet.

How to Take Your Make Up From Day to Night

comments
Sometimes life gets so busy, you don't have time to change your outfit and put on a whole new face twice a day. Here are some quick tips that will take you from school or work to a night out:

P44800_hero.jpg
Get glossy - A high shine lip gloss will instantly glam up your look. Try Sephora Brand Brilliant Shine Lip Gloss, $10 at Sephora.

P187500_hero.jpg
Add some shimmer - try a shimmering bronzer or dust on some sparkling eye shadow. Anything that glitters always looks fabulous in the evening. Try Clinique Shimmering Tones Powder, $28.50 at Sephora.

P209113_hero.jpg
Give your hair some body - Stash a travel-sized volumizing dry shampoo in your purse and when you need some extra oomph, flip your head upside down and spritz away. Try Ojon Rub-Out Dry Cleanser To Go, $10 at Sephora.

P167712_hero.jpg
Try fake lashes - Keep some faux lashes in your bag for the next time you need to look amazing in five minutes. Pop into the bathroom, apply (they're really not that difficult to apply - I promise!) and you're ready to go. All eyes will be on your eyes! Try Sephora Brand False Eye Lashes, $8-15 at Sephora.

Hot Hair Trends for 2010

Looking to switch up your style for the spring season? Get inspired by these runway looks:

00300m.jpg
High Buns at Lanvin

Giant, messy buns sat atop the models' heads at Lanvin's spring 2010 RTW show. This style looks effortlessly chic, like you just rolled out of bed looking amazing. Plus a high bun takes hair away from your face and neck, leaving the focus on spring's statement jewelry and bold make up.

00140m.jpg
Oversized  Bows at Marc by Marc Jacobs

Models at Marc by Marc were decorated with oversized bows, which gave of a young and playful vibe. If bows aren't your thing, experiment with other colorful statement accessories, like flower clips or feather headbands.

00060m.jpg
Side Bangs at Roberto Cavalli

Stylists created this look with clips on the models, but if you're planning on getting a new cut for spring, try long side bangs. They will be an attention-grabbing switch from a center part!

00020m.jpg
Ribbons at Zac Posen

Stylist Odile Gilbert didn't actually use ribbons in the models hair - she wove in long, neon extensions to simulate them. Get this look on a budget by using actual ribbons - pick a fun color like hot pink or electric blue. Weave it through a ponytail, tie it at the end, then twist into a bun and secure to hide the knots.

Budget-Friendly Travel Beauty Kits

Whether you're heading to a tropical destination, spending the weekend looking at colleges out of state, or sleeping over a friend's house, bringing your entire beauty regimen is a hassle. Kits filled with travel-sized products fit easily into your suitcase or backpack and keep everything organized and neat. Plus, since they come in cases, you're less likely to have spillage (ever have an entire bottle of shampoo empty itself all over your clothes on a trip? Not fun.). Here our our top picks for budget-friendly beauty travel kits:
